Team Formation and Member Replacement Rules

From Destination ImagiNationTM Rules of the Road 2002-03, pg. 9:

Please Note: Teams must carefully follow the rules of Team Formation and Competition Level. Teams that have not followed these rules may present their solutions but will not be scored and will not be considered for the next Tournament Level. Any team that does not have a current Passport License will not be allowed to compete.

Team Members

Your team may recruit up to seven team members but no more. Only the original team members (up to seven) are allowed to work on the Team Challenge solution.

  1. Teams may compete with fewer than seven team members, but in order to be considered a team, there must be at least two members.

  2. Once your team has begun working on the Team Challenge solution, you may add team members up to a maximum of seven until you submit your registration roster to your first Tournament. After your team has registered for the first Tournament but before competing, you may add team members with the permission of the Tournament Director, but only if you had not previously reached seven team members.

  3. Your team may not replace team members after the total of members has reached seven, even if a team member quits, moves away or is unable to attend the Tournament for any reason. If a team member moves away, that person is still considered part of your team and may still compete with the team if he/she is able.

  4. Your team may not add team members between Tournaments for any reason, even if your team does not have seven team members. Adding team members between Tournaments will result in disqualification as a competitive team. Your team may still perform but will not be scored.

  5. If a majority of the team members leaves your team, you may form a new team by adding new team members, but you may not use any part of your original solution and you must select a different Team Challenge.

NExT Region CPSO Interpretation

  • Once a team selects a Team Challenge, anyone who works on that challenge - even for a single meeting - is considered a team member.

  • Team members may be added to an existing team prior to its first competition up to a total of seven members including any team members who are no longer participating.

  • Once a team registers, it may only add a team member by first contacting the Tournament Director and receiving permission to add the player. It is VERY important that the Tournament Director officially add the player to the team roster. Failure to do so may disqualify the team and prevent it from being scored at the tournament. Further, materials used at the tournament, including awards, are based on team registration information. Note that if the team has had 7 members, the Tournament Director will not grant permission to add another.

  • After a team competes in a tournament it CANNOT ADD MEMBERS - period.
Exception: There is one exception to the adding team members rules: if more than half of all the people who have joined the team and participated in solving the Team Challenge quit, the team is allowed to reform BUT MUST CHOOSE A NEW TEAM CHALLENGE to solve. If the team has already registered, the Tournament Director must approve the reformation of the team.

If any of these guidelines are violated the team will be allowed to present their solution, but will not be scored or eligible to advance to the next tournament.

The following is offered for illustrative purposes and is not intended to be a substitute for the National Destination ImagiNationTM rules for forming teams, or for the interpretations offered herein by NExT CPSO:

- Example -

ABC Middle School is forming a DI team. Four members from last year are participating, and 2 others have expressed interest.

At the first meeting, all six students were present, met their team manager and heard about the year's challenges.

At the second meeting the four members of last year's team plus only one of the new members from the first meeting attend. At this meeting the team chooses its Team Challenge and begins initial discussion of how the problem might solved. EVERYONE attending this meeting is now part of the team. Note that the second prospective team member who attended the first meeting is not considered part of the team because he has not participated in solving the selected problem.

Two meetings later, one of last year's members, Sally, decides that she can no longer participate because her soccer team and gymnastics lessons are taking too much time. Sally will remain a member of the team, even though she is no longer participating. She is considered part of the team and counts against the maximum of 7 members. Because the team only has 5 members at this time, 2 more may still be added.

At the fourth meeting another member is added. That brings the team total to 6, but only 5 are participating.

At the seventh meeting yet another member is added. The team is now full with 7 members, even though only 6 are participating. No more team members can be added - even if more people quit. (see Exception above)

At the ninth meeting, Sally decides that she can spare the time, and would like to participate. Because she is a member of the team already, her participation is allowed.
